How the job went
Problem
The boot lid electrics were playing up: the lights and the boot release button did not work, and a bulb warning was lit on the dashboard.
What we did
We found broken wires in the rubber grommet, replaced the damaged sections with flexible wire and sealed the joints with moisture-proof heat-shrink tubing.
Result
The boot lid electrics work perfectly, and the sealed joints protect against repeat short circuits.
Job details
A cult classic: the 2001 BMW 3 Series (E46) with a 1.8 litre petrol engine (87kw). Although these cars are known for good reliability, time and daily use tend to take their toll on the car’s electronics and wiring. This time the customer came to us with a problem typical of this model: faults in the boot lid electrics.
Broken wiring: the typical E46 “ailment”
Over the years, as the boot is opened and closed countless times, the wires that run through the rubber gaiter from the body to the boot lid are constantly flexed. Winter frost and summer heat make the insulation hard and brittle until the wires eventually snap or short circuit. This causes a range of annoying symptoms, such as:
- The number plate lights or reversing lights don’t work.
- The boot can no longer be opened with the button or the remote.
- A bulb failure warning stays on permanently on the instrument cluster.
Work carried out: electrical system and wiring repair
Drawing on their experience with BMW electrical systems, our mechanics precisely located the damage and fully restored the wiring:
- Replacing the damaged wire sections: The broken, damaged and oxidised wires at the rubber flex point were cut out and replaced with new, highly flexible wires designed for long-term, frequent bending.
- Secure insulation: The joints weren’t simply wrapped in insulating tape. They were securely connected and sealed with moisture-resistant heat-shrink tubing, guaranteeing protection against water ingress and preventing repeat short circuits.

We never just wrap joints in insulating tape. Heat-shrink tubing keeps moisture out, so the problem does not come back.
