How do you know the running gear needs repair?

Running gear wears gradually, so the signs are easy to miss. Watch out for these signs.

Clatter on rough roads

Driving over potholes or bumps, you hear clattering or rattling.

The car wanders on the road

The car becomes harder to control and unstable, especially in bends.

Uneven tyre wear

The tyres wear unevenly or faster than usual.

Steering wheel vibrates or shakes

The steering wheel vibrates or shakes when you accelerate or brake.

Car pulls to one side

Driving straight, the car drifts off line and you have to hold it with the steering wheel.

Heavy steering

The steering becomes heavy, hard to turn or slow to respond.

Key running gear parts

Together, these parts determine how your car holds the road. During diagnostics we check each of them.

  1. 1

    Shock absorber

Damps the bouncing after potholes. A worn shock absorber makes the car sway and reduces stability.

  2. 2

    Spring

Carries the car's weight and keeps the ride height. A broken spring causes clatter, and the car may lean.

  3. 3

    Ball joint

Connects the control arm to the wheel hub. A worn ball joint knocks over bumps and makes handling worse.

  4. 4

Tie rod and tie rod end

Transfer the steering movement to the wheels. Free play causes vague steering and uneven tyre wear.

  5. 5

    Bushes and joints

Absorb shocks at the control arm joints. Cracked bushes cause clatter and throw the wheel alignment out.

What we check in running gear diagnostics

During diagnostics we check the entire running gear. Most often we repair or replace:

  • Shock absorbers
  • Springs
  • Ball joints
  • Tie rods
  • Joints
  • Bushes
  • Wheel geometry: toe and camber
  • Checks after an accident or a hard impact

Why the running gear matters so much

The running gear is the combination of the suspension and steering systems. Its condition determines how stable and safe the car is on the road, how easy it is to steer and how evenly the tyres wear.

Bad roads, long use or careless driving gradually wear the parts out. Timely repair extends the car's life and keeps it safe, while a neglected defect can damage other parts too.

At the GT Garage workshop we check the running gear with specialist equipment. After diagnostics the mechanic calls you, explains the findings and agrees the price. After the repair we set the wheel alignment and check the car on a test drive.

Running gear repair FAQ

Didn't find an answer? Call or message us and a mechanic will reply.

What is a car's running gear?

It's the combination of the suspension and steering systems: shock absorbers, springs, ball joints, tie rods, bushes and joints. It determines the car's handling, stability, tyre wear and ride comfort.

How do I know my car needs running gear repair?

The main signs are clatter on rough roads, the car wandering or pulling to one side, a vibrating or heavy steering wheel and uneven tyre wear. After an accident or a hard impact, a check is needed in any case.

How often should the running gear be checked?

As soon as you notice any of the signs, as well as before a technical inspection and after long use. That way you catch faults early, before they get expensive.

Can just one running gear part be replaced?

Yes, a damaged part can usually be replaced on its own. Some parts, such as shock absorbers, are best replaced in pairs on the same axle. The mechanic will explain this before work starts.

Do I need a wheel alignment after running gear repair?

Often, yes. After many parts are replaced, such as tie rods, the wheel geometry changes. That's why we set the toe and camber after the repair, so the car drives straight and the tyres wear evenly.

How much does running gear repair cost?

Diagnostics cost from €40, and we agree the repair price with you before work starts. It depends on the car and the damaged parts. We start the repair only with your approval.
