When should brake pads or discs be replaced?

Brakes are one of the most important safety features. If you notice any of these signs, don't wait.

Squealing or clatter

You hear unusual noises when braking: squealing, grinding or clatter.

Soft or vibrating pedal

The pedal is too soft, sinks to the floor or vibrates.

Longer braking distance

The car brakes more slowly and needs a longer distance to stop completely.

Fluid spots

Brake fluid spots are visible near the wheels or under the car.

Pulls to one side when braking

The car drifts off a straight line while braking.

Brake or ABS light on

The brake system or ABS warning light lights up on the dashboard.

In brief

Brake repair means brake system diagnostics and replacement of worn parts: pads, discs, calipers, cylinders and lines, plus a brake fluid change and bleeding. GT Garage does this at its car service in Riga, Teika, Krustabaznīcas iela 12C. Diagnostics cost from €40, we agree the repair price before work starts, and there is a warranty on labour and parts.

How brake pads and discs differ

Pads and discs work as a pair, but they wear at different rates. During diagnostics we check both.

Brake pads

Friction linings that press against the disc. They wear faster and need replacing more often.

  • Common sign: squealing when braking
  • Replaced in pairs on the same axle
  • Worn pads can damage the disc

Brake discs

They last longer, but over time they get thinner, grooved or warped.

  • Common sign: vibration in the pedal or steering wheel
  • Replaced in pairs on the same axle
  • New discs usually get new pads too

Worn pads and discs versus new ones

Wear isn't always visible from the outside, but when braking you feel it both in the pedal and on the road.

Worn pads and discsBefore

Worn pads and discs

Thin linings, a grooved or warped disc. The brakes squeal, the pedal vibrates and the braking distance gets longer.

New pads and discsAfter

New pads and discs

Full-thickness linings and a smooth disc. The brakes work quietly, the pedal feels even and the car stops more safely.

Brake repair FAQ

Didn't find an answer? Call or message us and a mechanic will reply.

When should brake pads be replaced?

When they have worn down to the minimum thickness set by the manufacturer, or when signs appear: squealing, a longer braking distance or a warning light. We check pad condition during diagnostics.

What are the signs of faulty brakes?

The most common signs are squealing or clatter when braking, a soft or vibrating pedal, a longer braking distance, fluid spots, the car pulling to one side, or a brake or ABS light on the dashboard.

How often should brakes be checked?

It's worth checking the brakes at every regular service and whenever you notice a sign. Also before a technical inspection and after hard driving.

How much does brake repair cost?

Diagnostics cost from €40, and we agree the repair price with you before work starts. It depends on the car and the parts to be replaced. We start the repair only with your approval.

Should brake pads be replaced along with the discs?

Usually, yes. New discs get new pads so they bed in evenly and the brakes work efficiently. Pads, on the other hand, are often replaced on their own if the discs are still in good condition.

Can I drive with faulty brakes?

No, it's not safe for you or anyone else. If the brakes feel unusual, drive only as much as you have to and book a check as soon as possible.
