Manual or automatic gearbox: what's the difference
We repair both types of gearbox, but the symptoms and the repair process differ.
Manual gearbox
The gears, synchronisers and seals wear most often. Problems are usually felt right when you change gear.
- Gears jump out or are hard to engage
- Droning or rattling while driving
- Oil leaking from the casing or joints
Automatic gearbox
A more complex design with valves, clutches and electronic control. The condition of the oil matters a lot.
- The gearbox slips or shifts with a jolt
- The AT or Transmission light comes on
- The car moves in only one mode
Signs of a faulty gearbox
If you notice any of these signs, don't keep driving on a faulty gearbox. A small defect quickly becomes an expensive repair.
Hard to change gear
A gear engages with effort or the gearbox “slips”, especially with automatics.
Unusual noises
Rattling, droning or humming while the gearbox is working is not normal.
Oil leak
Oil traces under the car or on the gearbox casing, joints and seals.
Vibrations and shudder
Rough driving or shudder right at the moment of a gear change.
Light on the dashboard
An AT, Check, Transmission or other gearbox warning comes on.
Car moves only partly
The car won't move or moves in only one gear, for example only in reverse.
How we repair a gearbox
Every repair starts with a clear cause, not with replacing parts on a hunch.
- 01
Diagnostics and fault assessment
Computerised diagnostics and a mechanical check show the cause and extent of the fault.
- 02
Call and agreement
The mechanic calls you, explains the findings and agrees the next steps and the price.
- 03
Removal and repair
We remove and strip the gearbox, check the gears, clutches, seals and valves, and replace damaged parts.
- 04
Oil change and cleaning
After the repair we do a full oil change and clean the gearbox so it runs smoothly for a long time.
We don't start a repair without your approval, and we give a warranty on all work and parts.
How a gearbox fault develops
A gearbox rarely fails overnight. It usually warns you several times, and at each stage the repair gets more complicated.
- Sign 1
Noise or oil traces
A drone, a hum or oil spots under the car appear. At this stage the repair is usually the simplest.
- Sign 2
Hard to change gear
Gears engage with effort, an automatic shifts with a jolt or slips. Wear is already affecting the parts.
- Sign 3
Warning on the dashboard
The AT or Transmission light comes on, and the gearbox may switch to limp mode with limited gears.
- Failure
Car won't move, or only partly
The car moves in only one gear or not at all. Many parts often need replacing, and the repair is the most expensive.
Gearbox repair FAQ
Didn't find an answer? Call or message us and a mechanic will reply.
Can I drive with a faulty gearbox?
It's not recommended. If you keep driving with a small defect, other gearbox parts are often damaged too, and the repair becomes much more expensive. The gearbox can also fail completely on the road.
Do you repair automatic gearboxes?
Yes, we repair both automatic and manual gearboxes. The process differs, so we always start with diagnostics and only then plan the repair.
Can I get just a gearbox oil change?
Yes, if diagnostics show no serious faults. Fresh oil at the interval set by the manufacturer helps the gearbox run smoothly and last longer.
How do I know my gearbox is faulty?
The most common signs are hard gear changes or slipping, noises, oil leaks and vibrations during gear changes. A warning light may also come on, or the car may move in only one mode.
How much does gearbox repair cost?
Diagnostics cost from €40, and we agree the repair price with you before work starts. It depends on the gearbox type and the fault. We start the repair only with your approval.
How often should gearbox oil be changed?
Follow the interval the manufacturer sets for your car. If you drive hard or with heavy loads, it's worth having the gearbox checked more often.
