Why headlights turn yellow

Modern headlight lenses aren’t glass but polycarbonate. At the factory they get a thin UV coating, but sun, road grit and car wash brushes wear it away over the years. Then the plastic starts to oxidise: the surface turns hazy and yellow and lets through less and less light.

Polishing removes the oxidised layer, but without new protection the yellowing comes back within a few months. That’s why we always apply a UV coating after polishing.

If the headlights are so dull that you can hardly see the road at night, it can also cause problems at the roadworthiness test. If there is moisture inside or the light doesn’t work at all, the fault may be in the electrics, not the lens.

Headlight polishing or replacement?

Often your headlights don't need replacing. If only the surface layer is damaged, polishing is enough. Replacement is needed when the damage goes deeper.

Headlight polishing

We remove the damaged surface layer and restore the headlight's clarity and shine.

  • Works for dullness, yellowing and fine scratches
  • We finish with a coat that protects against UV rays
  • You keep your original headlights

Headlight replacement

Needed if the headlight housing is cracked or the damage is inside.

  • Cracks, chips or holes in the housing
  • Moisture or damage inside the headlight
  • A damaged reflector that polishing can't fix

Halogen, xenon and LED headlights

Haze harms every headlight, but each type in a different way.

Headlight typeWhat a hazy lens doesWhat to do
HalogenThe light gets weaker and more yellow, and you see the road at a shorter distancePolishing with a UV coating
XenonA hazy lens scatters the bright light in all directions and dazzles oncoming driversPolishing, then a check of the headlight aim
LEDThe units are often large and complex, so a new headlight costs a lotPolishing is usually far cheaper than a new headlight

If you're not sure which headlights your car has, the mechanic will see it straight away.

Headlight polishing step by step

Over time, UV rays, road salt, stone chips and car wash chemicals make headlights cloudy. Here is how we restore their clarity.

  1. Cleaning and preparation

We clean the headlight surface of dirt, grease and other contamination.

  2. Surface sanding

Using abrasives of different grits, we remove the damaged layer and smooth out scratches and cloudiness.

  3. Polishing with compounds

Using professional polishing compounds, we restore the headlight's clarity and shine.

  4. Protective coat and check

We apply a coat that protects against UV rays, check the light output and advise you on headlight care.

If we see that your headlights need more than polishing, the mechanic tells you before work starts.

What you get after polishing

Better visibility at night

Clear headlights let more light through, so you see better in the dark and in bad weather.

Safer on the road

Other road users notice you sooner, and the headlights meet technical inspection requirements more easily.

A better-kept look

Clear headlights instantly make a car look better cared for, which also helps if you're getting it ready for sale.

Headlight polishing FAQ

Didn't find an answer? Call or message us and a mechanic will reply.

How much does headlight polishing cost?

The price of headlight polishing depends on the condition of the headlights. The consultation is free: drop by, the mechanic will inspect the headlights and tell you the price before we start work.

Why do headlights become dull and yellow?

Over time the headlight surface is damaged by UV rays, road salt, stone chips and car wash chemicals. The surface turns cloudy, less light gets through, and you see worse in the dark.

How often should headlights be polished?

There's no fixed interval: polish them when they become dull or yellow again. The protective coat and proper care help the result last longer.

Does headlight polishing help pass the technical inspection?

Often, yes. If the headlights are dull and let less light through, polishing improves this, but if the housing or the inside is damaged, replacement may be needed.

Can polishing replace a headlight replacement?

Often, yes, if only the surface layer is damaged. If a headlight has cracks, moisture inside or a damaged reflector, polishing won't help and the headlight will need replacing.

How can I keep my headlights clear for longer?

Wash the headlights with gentle products and don't rub them dry. After polishing, the mechanic will tell you how to care for them so the protective coat lasts longer.

How long does headlight polishing last?

It depends on the coating and on how the car is looked after. Without UV protection a polished headlight can turn hazy again within a few months, so we always apply a protective coating after polishing.

Can I polish headlights with toothpaste?

The lens looks clearer for a short while, but toothpaste only removes the top layer and leaves no UV protection, so the yellowing soon returns. Polishing the wrong way can also leave scratches that scatter the light even more.
