When should the DPF be checked?

A clogged DPF hurts engine performance and can cause costly damage. Watch out for these signs.

DPF or Check Engine light on

A warning light on the dashboard is the first signal that the filter needs checking.

Loss of power

The engine runs unevenly, the car pulls more weakly and fuel consumption goes up.

Limp mode

The car often switches into limp mode and limits power.

Smoke from the exhaust

Grey or black smoke means the filter can no longer cope with the soot.

Failed regeneration

Frequent or incomplete regeneration, longer starting or vibrations.

Unknown service history

You bought a used car and don't know when the DPF was last serviced.

In brief

A DPF is a diesel particulate filter that traps soot, and over time it gets clogged. At GT Garage car service in Riga, Teika, Krustabaznīcas iela 12C, we carry out DPF diagnostics, cleaning, repair and replacement. Diagnostics cost from €40, we agree the price before work starts, and if the filter can be cleaned, we don't replace it. There is a warranty on labour and parts.

DPF filter service

DPF, soot filter, particulate filter: what it is

DPF, soot filter and diesel particulate filter are all the same part. It sits in the exhaust of a diesel engine and traps soot so it doesn’t end up in the air. Peugeot and Citroën call it FAP.

Two kinds of deposits build up in the filter. Soot burns off during regeneration. Ash, which comes from engine oil additives, doesn’t burn and slowly fills the filter over the years. So even a car that is driven correctly will need its filter cleaned sooner or later.

Less ash forms if you use a low-ash engine oil approved for diesels with a DPF. We pick the right oil during an oil change. If the filter clogs unusually fast, the cause is often in the engine, for example the injectors or the EGR valve, and car diagnostics will show it.

DPF cleaning or replacement?

Not every clogged filter needs replacing. Diagnostics show which solution suits your car.

DPF cleaning

Using specialist equipment and chemical agents, we restore the filter's flow, if that is still possible.

  • Suitable if the filter isn't physically damaged
  • Restores flow and engine performance
  • Lets you keep your existing filter

DPF replacement

If the filter is permanently damaged or completely blocked, we replace it with a new or remanufactured one.

  • Needed when cleaning no longer helps
  • Choice of a new or remanufactured filter
  • Warranty on labour and parts

How a DPF cleans itself: types of regeneration

The filter cleans itself by burning off soot. This happens in several ways.

TypeWhen it happensWhat to know
Passive regenerationOn the motorway, when the exhaust gases are hotHappens by itself if the car regularly does longer trips
Active regenerationWhen the filter is full, the ECU raises the exhaust temperatureIdle speed may be higher and the fan may run after the engine is off. Better not to cut the trip short
Forced regenerationIn the workshop with a diagnostic tool, if active regeneration failsHelps if the filter is mostly full of soot
CleaningWhen ash has built up or the filter is badly cloggedRegeneration can't burn ash; it can only be washed out

Diagnostics show which option suits your car: they read the pressure difference across the filter and the regeneration history.

Important

A car without a working DPF may not meet technical requirements and can fail the technical inspection. That's why we first look for a way to restore the filter, and only then talk about replacement.

What shortens the life of a DPF

The filter clogs faster if:

  • The car only does short trips in town and regeneration can't finish
  • The engine is switched off during active regeneration
  • The engine oil isn't approved for cars with a DPF
  • Faulty injectors or EGR valve make the engine produce more soot
  • The turbo leaks oil into the exhaust
  • The DPF warning light is ignored for a long time

DPF filter FAQ

Didn't find an answer? Call or message us and a mechanic will reply.

Why is it important to monitor the DPF's condition?

To avoid loss of power and engine damage, and to keep the car within emissions requirements. A completely clogged filter can even block the exhaust system.

Can the DPF be cleaned, or does it need replacing?

It can often be cleaned and its flow restored. Replacement is needed if the filter is permanently damaged or completely blocked, and diagnostics will tell you which applies.

How much does DPF cleaning or replacement cost?

Diagnostics cost from €40, and the mechanic agrees the cleaning or replacement price with you before work starts. It depends on the car and the filter's condition, and we start work only with your approval.

Is DPF removal legal?

A car used on public roads without a working DPF may not meet technical requirements and can fail the technical inspection. That's why we recommend cleaning or replacing the filter, and the mechanic will explain what is possible in your situation.

Will the car drive better after DPF cleaning?

Yes, if a clogged filter was causing the problem. After cleaning or replacement, power usually returns, the engine runs more smoothly and fuel consumption drops.

How can I avoid DPF clogging?

Don't ignore warning lights or signs of failed regeneration, and ask for the DPF to be checked during servicing. A longer motorway drive now and then also does the filter good.

What is a soot filter?

A soot filter is the same thing as a DPF: the diesel particulate filter in the exhaust. It traps soot and regularly burns it off during regeneration.

What should I do if the DPF warning light comes on?

If the car drives normally, drive for 15-20 minutes on the motorway at a steady speed so the filter can regenerate, and check the owner's manual. If the light stays on or the car goes into limp mode, book diagnostics, because driving for a long time with a full filter can damage the turbo too.
