Car AC recharge and repair in Riga, Teika.
Car AC recharge and repair in Riga: we test the system for leaks, disinfect the air ducts and recharge the refrigerant to the manufacturer's requirements.
When does your AC need a recharge or repair?
An AC system rarely fails suddenly. It usually gives warning signs early, if you know what to look for.
Weak cooling
The AC cools poorly or not at all. Low refrigerant or a fault in the system is often to blame.
Unpleasant smell
A smell comes from the vents because microorganisms or mould have built up in the system.
Noise when switched on
You hear humming, squealing or other unusual noises when you turn on the AC.
Windows fog up more often
The system can't cope with the moisture in the cabin, and the windows fog up more than usual.
Slow to cool down
If you have to wait a long time for cool air, the system may have lost its seal or need a recharge.
Visible leaks
Traces of oil or refrigerant are visible on the pipes and system components.
In brief
Car AC recharge and repair covers air conditioning diagnostics, a leak test, disinfection, a refrigerant recharge and replacement of damaged parts. We do this at GT Garage car service in Riga, Teika, Krustabaznīcas iela 12C. Diagnostics cost from €40, we agree the repair price before work starts, and we give a warranty on labour and parts.
Your car AC in summer and winter
Air conditioning isn't just a summer comfort. It helps all year round, as long as the system is in good shape.
Check before the heat
Check the system before the first hot days so you don't wait ages for cool air in summer.
A cool cabin in the heat
The AC cools the cabin air, so driving on a hot day is safer and less tiring.
Dry, fog-free windows
The AC dries the air, so the windows clear faster and fog up less. Use it in winter too.
Why the AC isn't cooling: the most common causes
The symptom often hints at where to look. Diagnostics show the exact cause.
| Symptom | Most common cause | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Blows warm or only slightly cool air | Low refrigerant, usually because of a leak | System pressure and leak-tightness |
| Cools while driving but not in traffic or standing | Radiator fan not working, or the condenser is clogged | The fan and the condenser at the front of the car |
| Switches on and off again straight away | Too little refrigerant or a pressure sensor fault | Pressure and sensors |
| Smell when you turn on the fan | Bacteria on the evaporator, an old cabin filter | Evaporator, cabin filter and air ducts |
| Water on the passenger footwell | Blocked condensate drain tube | The drain and the evaporator housing |
| Humming or clicking when the AC is on | Worn compressor bearing or clutch | The compressor and its drive |
If the AC gets weak again a few weeks after a recharge, there is a leak, and it has to be found first.

A full service is more than a recharge. Here is what we check and do so the system runs for a long time without odours.
- System diagnostics with specialist equipment
- Seal and leak test
- Air duct disinfection
- Evaporator cleaning against odours
- Refrigerant recharge to manufacturer requirements
- Compressor oil top-up
- Pipe and condenser repair or replacement
- Compressor repair or replacement
Important
If your AC hasn't been serviced for more than 2 years, a preventive service is recommended. Diagnostics and a recharge are also needed after an accident or an AC repair.

First we find the problem, then we agree everything with you, and only then do we start work.

We recharge the refrigerant and compressor oil, or replace damaged pipes, condensers or the compressor.
We give a warranty on all repair work and spare parts.
Which refrigerant your car uses
Car AC systems use two types of refrigerant. They are not interchangeable, and each needs its own fittings and oil.
| Refrigerant | Which cars | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| R134a | Older cars, usually built before 2017 | Long the standard. New cars in the EU no longer use it because of its strong greenhouse effect. |
| R1234yf | Newer cars. Mandatory for all new cars in the EU since 2017 | A system built for R1234yf must not be filled with R134a, or the other way round. |
| How to find out | A sticker under the bonnet | If there's no sticker, the mechanic will find out from the model and year. |
When you book, tell us the make, model and year, so the mechanic knows in advance what your car needs.
How to look after your car's AC
A few simple habits extend the system's life and keep smells away:
- Run the AC at least once a week in winter too, so the seals don't dry out
- Switch off cooling a few minutes before you arrive but keep the fan on, so the evaporator dries
- On a hot day, air the cabin with the windows open first, then switch on the AC
- Change the cabin filter at every service or once a year
- Don't put off a check if the AC starts cooling less

Car AC recharge and repair FAQ
Didn't find an answer? Call or message us and a mechanic will reply.
Why should I service my car's AC regularly?
So the cabin cools efficiently, no odours develop and the system lasts longer. Regular servicing also protects you from costly faults later on.
How often should car AC be serviced?
If your AC hasn't been serviced for more than 2 years, it's time for a preventive service. Come in sooner if you notice weak cooling, a smell or leaks.
Will an AC recharge fix every problem?
Not always. If the system has a leak or a damaged part, the refrigerant will escape again. That's why we test for leaks first and only then recharge.
How much does car AC repair cost?
Work starts with diagnostics from €40, and the repair price is agreed with you before work begins. The total depends on what is faulty in the system.
How long does an AC recharge take?
It depends on the condition of the system. If we need to find a leak or replace parts, it takes longer, so the mechanic will give you an exact time after diagnostics.
Should I use the AC in winter too?
Yes. The AC dries the air, helps demist the windows and reduces humidity in the cabin. If the system isn't working properly, the windows fog up more often.
Why is my car AC blowing warm air?
Most often because the system is low on refrigerant due to a leak. Other causes are a compressor clutch that doesn't engage, a radiator fan that doesn't work, or a sensor fault. Diagnostics show which one it is in your car.
Which refrigerant does my car need?
Older cars usually use R134a, newer ones R1234yf. The sticker under the bonnet tells you exactly. The two must never be mixed or swapped.
