BMW 420d F36: From “Ate” Braking Power to Electrical Detective Work

The BMW 420d F36 got new Ate brakes, but the cause of its battery drain turned out to be a faulty FEM module.

How the job went

Problem

The front brakes were worn, and the battery went flat even when the car was parked.

What we did

We fitted Ate discs, pads and caliper repair kits. We measured a 0.6 A drain, found a fault in the FEM module and repaired a rear fog light contact.

Result

Braking is even and safe, and the cause of the battery drain has been found.

Job details

The BMW 4 Series (F36) Gran Coupe needs to be in excellent technical condition to deliver the driving pleasure it was built for. At GT Garage we carried out extensive work on this car, dealing with mechanical components as well as tracking down the cause of a “mysterious” battery drain.

Braking system: maximum safety with “Ate”

When it comes to BMW brakes, we don’t make compromises. On this 420d we fully renewed the front axle braking system using Ate products, a brand that is often original equipment for German car makers.

  • Fitted: New brake discs and pads from Ate.
  • Caliper service: The caliper repair kits were replaced (also Ate), ensuring even braking force and preventing premature pad wear or overheating.

Electrical diagnostics: where is the power going?

One of the most challenging problems on modern BMWs is parasitic battery drain. The customer complained that the battery kept going flat, and our diagnostics confirmed the suspicion: even in “sleep” mode the car was drawing 0.6A, well above normal.

The result of GT Garage’s “detective work”: After carefully checking the components, we found a fault in the FEM (Front Electronic Module). The FEM is the car’s “central brain”, responsible for lighting, access and many other functions. This module was preventing the car from fully entering sleep mode, draining the battery as a result.

At the same time we also fixed a fault at the rear right, repairing the fog light contact so that all the lighting works perfectly.

Why trust your BMW to us?

BMW F series models are packed with complex electronics. As this case shows, mechanical repair is only part of the job. The ability to diagnose and find a fault deep in the system (as with the FEM module) is what sets a good workshop apart from simply swapping parts.
